Wayfarers of Veeshan

So I got an 82 wizard merc for Ilena (journeyman 1) and I have to say my initial reaction is not overly impressed. It seems that on balanced they don't do enough damage (5Kish nuke every 7-8 seconds), and if you put them on burn they become aggro magnets and die faster than a chanter pet. It's likely my problem is I'm just not used to the new merc yet and will need to adjust my play style when boxing with him. It occurs to me that these mercs have no AAs, so there is no reduction to hate generation most DPS classes have. It would still be great in a group environment where you have a real tank to hold aggro, but I don't think DPS classes will have to worry about becoming obsolete anytime soon.

Thanks for the update, Merlaina. I was wondering how well these would actually work. I'm eager to see one in action (though not so eager to acquire one).

Well my wife accidentally dismissed her cleric merc instead of suspending it, so I figured it was a good opportunity to try them out. I'm looking forward to playing with him some more soon.

Ok, so I got to play with the merc more last night and I think better of him now. I found they work much better if you turn off auto-assist and use the call assist button after the mob is down to 90% or so. Used him against golems in underquarry to good effect. He nukes for 5-6K and crits for around 12K. His mana bar seems a little small, but I imagine that's largely due to him being a journeyman 1 merc. I'll have to go back with Ilena sometime and work on her SoD progression so I can try out a journeyman 5.
