While waiting for the raid to start last night, we noticed that now there are "wedding packages" available. I've never understood why people get married in EQ, but the concept is kind of cool. Here's .

It's kinda cool in a "never tell your friends about this in real life" kind of way. But I agree with you, Alley. I don't understand game marriages. It would be worthwhile if you received something for it like an aura that only affects the married couple, but without it I just don't see the point.

Oh, but these packs are WONDERFUL! A chapel, rings, a cake and everything! It was worth coming back to EQ just to see this (did you see the wedding video that went with the advertisement?)

As to why, you have to don your romantic cap. Friends of mine got married in 1999 by the banks of the river at the spires in the Karanas. He was from New Zealand; she was from Canada. They were over 8,000 miles apart physically. But they could be together in EQ. It was a very important part of their relationship. They had only met once in real life (at nearly $2000 a pop for airfare, it wasn't something you did every other weekend), and it was increasingly hard for them to be apart. The marriage in EQ helped them express their feelings towards each other, and they could at least share their happiness with their EQ buddies.

So the wedding took place...about 25 guests came (and the lag got worse and worse as each celebrant arrived). The bride walked up the hill from the river with her attendants, and the groom waited nervously on top of the little hill facing the entrance to South Karana. The guild leader conducted the ceremony, the bride resplendent in specially crafted armor and the groom looking pretty spiffy himself. Once the final "I do's" finished echoing into the mist, the casters let loose a volley of nukes that brightened the evening sky (and further increased the lag).

The groom /hugged the bride - everyone /hugged each other. Then we all went on a raid. It was glorious. :P

EDIT: After reading about these wedding packs, I told Wert I wanted to get married in EQ. He fixed me with a steely glare and informed me that, IF rogues got married at all, they preferred to do it in secret, and that eloping was highly underrated :?

I guess I'll play crotchety old man and say "sounds dumb". I never understood in-game marriages, except that they were
a form of flirtation and an ego build for those who prefer, or rely on, faceless interaction with their partners. I've always
found it a bit repulsive and childish myself. Weird, considering I like to think of myself as fairly open minded.

Well now isn't that a punch in the gut for this early morning :)

I officiated at one EQ wedding, and while I totally got into searching for vows, procedure, ceremony, etc., I was a tiny bit creeped out at how serious the bride and groom seemed to be. I admit struggling with a wild urge to stop in the middle of the wedding and say, "This isn't REAL, people . . ."
